HiTherma is a non-invasive treatment method that combines high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and radiofrequency (RF) energy to target specific layers beneath the skin. This combined approach supports the body’s natural collagen-building processes and is used in clinical settings to manage mild to moderate skin laxity.

What Is HiTherma?

HiTherma combines two clinically established technologies to target different skin layers:

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

This method uses focused ultrasound waves to create small zones of thermal effect deep within the skin. These zones initiate a healing response that leads to collagen production and tightening in the deeper layers without affecting the skin surface.

ThermalLift Radiofrequency

Radiofrequency energy is delivered in a controlled manner to heat the dermal and subdermal layers. This causes immediate contraction of existing collagen fibres and stimulates longer-term collagen synthesis. This treatment is typically used for more superficial layers compared to HIFU.

Combination Treatment

For patients with skin laxity at multiple levels, both HIFU and RF may be used in a single session or across multiple sessions to achieve more comprehensive results. Treatment plans are tailored based on individual anatomy and goals, as determined during consultation with a medical aesthetic specialist.

What Is HiTherma Effective For?

HiTherma is suitable for patients who present with mild to moderate skin laxity and prefer a non-invasive treatment approach. It is commonly selected by those who are not yet ready for surgical procedures or who wish to extend the benefits of previous aesthetic treatments.

Treated areas typically include the lower face, where skin may appear loose or sagging along the cheeks, neck or jawline.

The brow and upper facial area can also be treated, particularly to address early drooping of the eyebrows. For patients with concerns about abdominal skin, particularly after pregnancy or weight fluctuations, HiTherma may help improve skin texture and firmness.

How Does HiTherma Work?

The HiTherma procedure begins with a consultation and skin assessment. On the day of treatment, the skin is first cleansed to remove any surface residue such as oils, makeup, or skincare products. A conductive gel is applied to the area being treated, particularly when HIFU is used, to facilitate smooth contact and effective energy transmission.

The medical practitioner then uses a handheld device to deliver HIFU and/or RF energy to predetermined tissue depths. Each pulse of energy is administered with care, following a mapped treatment plan based on the patient’s anatomy and skin thickness.

The energy delivery causes sensations of warmth, and some patients may notice mild tingling or sensitivity in certain areas during the session. The procedure typically lasts between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas treated.

Once the session is completed, the gel is removed and post-care instructions are discussed.

Areas Suitable For HiTherma

What to Expect After Treatment

Following treatment, the skin may appear slightly flushed or feel warm to the touch. These effects are expected and usually resolve within a few hours.

Post-treatment instructions include washing the area gently with lukewarm water and using a mild cleanser for the first 24 hours. Patients should avoid exfoliating products, hot showers, or steam treatments during this period.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen should be applied to treated areas before sun exposure. Protecting the skin from UV damage is important to maintain skin quality during the collagen remodelling phase. Most patients resume normal routines immediately after treatment.

Follow-up Care

Patients may be advised to return for follow-up consultations to assess their response to treatment. While a single session may suffice in some cases, others may benefit from a short series of treatments spaced several weeks apart.

Maintenance sessions may be recommended every 12 to 18 months depending on individual skin ageing and lifestyle factors. Maintaining consistent skincare habits, staying hydrated, and avoiding unnecessary sun exposure can help preserve treatment outcomes.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients benefit from an initial series of 1-3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Your medical aesthetic specialist will create a personalised treatment plan based on your specific concerns and the condition of your skin.

    Is HiTherma painful?

Most patients describe the sensation as tolerable warmth with occasional brief moments of heightened heat. The medical aesthetic specialist can adjust treatment settings to ensure your comfort, and no anaesthesia is typically required.

    How long do results last?

Results typically last 12-18 months, though this varies based on individual factors like age, skin condition, and lifestyle. The natural ageing process continues, so maintenance treatments are recommended to preserve results long-term.

Will I need time off work?

Most patients return to normal activities immediately after treatment. HiTherma doesn’t require recovery time, making it suitable for those with busy schedules.

Is HiTherma suitable for all skin types?

HiTherma can be adjusted to safely treat most skin types. During your consultation, your medical aesthetic specialist will assess your skin and medical history to confirm your suitability for treatment.
